Buddy, phantoms & existentialism

Buddy and his coat of many colors .... not to intrude on the Biblical Joseph and his coat, but Buddy has a few differing shades. He wanted a photograph to show him posed in a more "dog-like" position than the one which appeared a week or two ago, so I tried to oblige him. Was he happy when he saw it? Not exactly. While he liked it in a general sense, he complained that the least I could have done before taking it was brush his coat so that he would not look like a ragamuffin. I agreed with him, but told him that would have to wait until our next "photo shoot." He certainly is a fussy guy !!!!

Television journalists & other idiots

I know language is like a flowing river, ever-moving and often changing, but this seems a bit too much ....

For those who have brushed into Jean-Paul Sarte or Soren Kierkegaard or Franz Kafka or read/seen the play, "Waiting for Godot," by Samuel Beckett, it sort of grates to hear a television journalist flippantly talk about "existential threats" to the United States in reference to Islamic terrorism or North Korean dictators.

Never mind that I think television is a medium which should be used solely for entertainment (you mean it is not ????) or that I believe television journalism almost always is "bad journalism" (only surpassed in that regard by internet journalism).

One definition of existentialism, for instance, is this: "A philosophical attitude opposed to rationalism and empiricism that stresses the individual's unique position as a self-determining agent responsible for the authenticity of his or her choices."

I suppose in that sense, a few thousand like-minded zealots could pose a threat, but to me it indicates any number of lazy or uneducated or just plain dumb journalists are looking for an easy, one-word way to describe a real or an imagined threat.

An avowed existentialist, Sarte, in his 1964 book entitled, "The Words," wrote this about his grandmother: "She believed in nothing; only her skepticism kept her from being an atheist." I assume many television journalists would describe Sarte's grandmother as an "existential threat" to something, somewhere.

Ahhhhhh, yes .... the music ....

The musical selections here are from the Finnish symphonic metal rock band Nightwish. The videos date back to the time when Tarja Turunen was the primary vocalist for the band. For those who think it is unusual or inappropriate for her to be performing, "The Phantom of the Opera," she is a classically-trained soprano and many rock 'n' roll "types" are well-grounded in a variety of music styles.

For instance, a little-known fact is that Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the 1970 rock opera, "Jesus Christ Superstar," for Ian Gillan's voice and that Gillan, front man for the heavy metal/hard rock band Deep Purple, performed the role of Jesus Christ on the first audio album.

Film director Norman Jewison wanted Gillan to reprise the role for the motion picture, but Gillan turned down the offer because he was touring with Deep Purple. Jewison then hired Ted Neeley for the role in the film, which was released in 1973.

Remember my "chair dancing" episodes from posts in years past? I still do it, and I for sure do it whenever I hear Nightwish performing, "Ever Dream" .... so, rock on, baby .... and, enjoy it while it is here and you are here .... it simply is fun to watch the band and the audience interacting with each other .... play with each other, if you will ....

Good morning Fram and Buddy,

I clicked on the Buddy's picture to "study" his coat of many colors. It is very nice.

I understand how Buddy felt after you took the previous picture. He was slightly underdressed and probably embarrassed. Yes, Buddy has to be brushed once in a while, I think. Does he like to be brushed, is he patient, Fram?

I believe that America needs free and safe press/media. So that is all about protecting journalism itself. But often media goes into knots and twists and loosing its balance between objectivity, being neutral and truthful. Should I call it existential crises? I am not sure.

It was a pure delight to listen to the Finnish symphonic metal rock band Nightwish. Its performance is beautiful!!!

I enjoyed your post, Fram. It's great.

Say hello again to a smart and adorable Buddy! This time Tasha and I are sending to him our warmest and kindest wishes.

I have rain today, so I probably will be spending much of my time at the computer. Snow is expected by the end of next week. This region is "infamous" for Halloween blizzards. Anyway ....

Yes, Kaya, if I recall correctly your point of origin is Vilnius in Lithuania .... just a "hop, skip and a swim" away from Finland. I know a young lady in Poland whose grandmother lives in Vilnius, which, she told me, once was part of Poland.

Nightwish is/was a great band. I am not certain which word is better to use because I have not listened to much of its music which does not include Tarja Turunen. All the original band members, for sure, are exceptional musicians and have great stage presence. Some say Tarja was the band, and I think a case can be made for that belief.

Buddy loves to be brushed and is very patient when I am doing it. Unfortunately, for him, I had him about six months before I ever did it, and only thought of it then because a young lady at the veterinary clinic where I take him complimented me on his coat. I stuttered and stammered a bit. Even now, I seldom think of brushing him.

As you might imagine with me coming from a print journalism background, I have little tolerance of or sympathy for other forms -- most notably those on television and on the internet. I always have thought of television news people mostly as rabble rousers. With the advent of the computer age, I tend to think of internet news types mostly as propagandists. A free press, most certainly, is part of the foundation of this country and it is a necessity for any country which truly values the freedom of its citizens.

Tasha and Buddy would quickly become great friends, I am certain, Kaya, as I think we are at this moment. Thank you, for your visit and your words. I appreciate both and wish only the best for you and for those you love.

That voice which calls to me - And speaks my name
And do I dream again - For now I find
The Phantom of the opera is there - Inside my mind

Like the word "surreal", the word/phrase "existential" and existential crisis/angst" have been appropriated by empty-headed, dead-brain, so-called "specialists" to make themselves look smart (no, I won't use the comparative. No, I refuse :-D). Hear that noise? It's Sartre, convulsing in his grave.

Greetings from London.

Well, it appears my musical selections made someone happy ....

It seems memories -- both good and sad -- surfaced from hearing the voice of Tarja Turunen. I enjoy listening to her, too, Anita, and, like you, I am a fan of Nightwish. I do listen to Tarja on occasion and, in fact, used one of her videos in a past post back around 2009 or 2010. I cannot remember if it was a Nightwish video or one of her while on her own, but I definitely recall it. This was during a time when I was searching for someone who might replace Sarah Brightman as my favorite woman singer and I listened to/posted a few.

Whether or not Tarja made Nightwish the band it was, I will leave to your judgment. The more I think about it, though, the more I believe her voice is the most powerful female voice in the history of rock 'n' roll and her voice, along with her stage presence, makes her (in my mind) the leading candidate for the greatest female singer during the rock 'n' roll era.

Buddy is, indeed, a handsome fellow and strong-willed. We make good partners.

I hope you are quick to recover from your illness; I will look forward to seeing your new blog; I had forgotten Tarja and the Scopions collaborated, but I listened to their song this afternoon; I will stay good and calm -- you, too, Anita.

No .... I have not forgotten Magdalena, and I do not think I ever will forget her. It is difficult to explain, but in a few words every woman I have been close to has been special to me. I see beauty in every woman I look at and I find some of them possessing many admirable characteristics. Hmmmm .... someday, maybe, I will attempt to write a post about this matter, but, right now, the words I want to use are difficult for me to find. I must try again another day ....

In the meanwhile, thank you, Anita, for your visit to me and for your words. You are special to me .... I hope you know that ....

To be included among "other idiots" is the chairman of the Democratic Party, Thomas Perez, who on Saturday called Donald Trump and "existential threat" to the United States and "the most dangerous president in American history."

Donnie might be many things, even the most dangerous president, ever, but no way is he an existential threat.

By the way, a few years ago I decided to visit Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris to see the grave of Jim Morrison, rather than Montparnasse Cemetery and the grave of Jean-Paul Sarte. Poor decision on my part .... I have regretted it since .... someday, maybe, I will have another chance.

Before then, thank you, CiL, for your visit here and for your comment. You have style, man ....

I have decided to try to publish more photographs of Buddy. He recognizes a camera when he sees one. He seems to enjoy being photographed .... although, like most dogs, he probably simply likes being the center of attention and being photographed is one way to accomplish that goal.

Yes, Smareis. I have read more than a little of Jean-Paul Sarte's work during my brief existence on this planet. He was very prolific and a major figure in the philosophy of existentialism and phenomenology. His writing also included biographies, plays, novels and literary criticism. I cannot imagine how he accomplished as much as he did. I could give you a list of a dozen things of his to read, and that would be only the beginning. "The Words," is autobiographical, and might be a good place to start.

Nightwish is a superb band, from my point of view, and could have risen to unknown heights had Tarja Turunen been as dedicated to the band as she was to herself. But, that is the story of many of us, it would seem. The band will be in Saint Paul next March. I might go to the concert, but I might not .... I do not even know who the female vocalist is these days and need to do a bit of research before I make a decision. Uffff .... I am becoming parochial, it would seem .... of course, I will go to the concert.

Yes, I will work hard to have a good week, Smareis .... I hope good fortune "adopts" you as its own girl child (hmmmm .... or whatever) .... stay happy and remember, I need your smile ....

¡Hello Fram!!!

Good morning, I see that the Bubdy is known to pose majestic in a very noble position for the camera; and is that these dogs... They are so presumed flirtatious who likes to be brushed and well handsome with his female, go as any of us humans. They are sometimes them more human than some other human... Well as you've named great characters I've read and I love them.
It is true what you write about television, they are always the same, the truth is that we live with so much terrified terrorism and nuclear weapons, hopefully which happens to Corea and coreans, among many others that are not left behind. It's been a pleasure to read you.
Thank you very much for your visit to my poetic space. If the rulers were poets, the wars would end up. A kiss and is very - very happy.

The video are beautiful.

¡Hola Fram!!!

Bien pues has nombrado a grandes personajes que yo he leído y me encantan.

I have had a number of dogs over the years, Marina, as pets when I was a boy, as hunting dogs when I was a teenager and a young man, as guard dogs when they were appropriate and now as companions. They all have similar traits, but, like people, they all are individuals onto themselves and each has its own personality. I have learned from each of them and, I think, Buddy and I form an excellent team and try to take care of each other.

The world most certainly is a topsy-turvy place at this point in time, I would agree. The sad fact is that it almost always is in that condition. The primary difference now is that weaponry is to the stage where a few missteps could bring on the annihilation of all life. Personally, I am becoming increasing disinterested in all the feuding and fighting, and would like to find a "Garden of Eden" and settle down there for as much time as I have left in this world.

I sort of agree with you that there would be no wars if poets were the rulers .... but, unfortunately, to become a ruler requires a certain amount of ruthlessness which is absent from most, if not all, individuals whose heart and soul rest in the creation of poetry. Humans possess both good and evil within them, and the primary struggle in life is the battle between those two elements to become dominant .... most of us make it through life with the issue never fully decided.

Thank you, Marina, for your visit here and for your comment. I very much enjoy your company ....

I see that it is well brushed and treated.
Relaxing and good with the dog.😌
Beautiful posing image.

There is no reason to watch TV too much, so there's so much junk.
War, violence, crimes and all kinds of depressing.
It is enough for me to watch television news in the evening, what's happening in the world.

This is a happy surprise, a Finnish girl sings on your blog.
Very impressive performer in Nightwist.
Tarja Turunen was chosen as the best Finnish singer in 2002.
I hear a few songs about Nightwish music, but not often.
Too heavy.
Wonderful performers They are.

Happy weekend!

The cold and the snow of winter lurk just beyond my door today. They come as no surprise because October often is a month of snowstorms here and the region is infamous for Halloween blizzards .... but, Liplatus, I see you have significantly more snow than I do. I am not the least bit envious.

There is no snowstorm or blizzard for me this time (so far, Halloween is not until next week), as only an inch or two are expected here. Northern Minnesota is where the action is at the moment .... nine inches already are on the ground and more is expected throughout the day and into the night.

Yes, Buddy is a handsome and a happy "young man." I keep telling him he could be a professional model, but he says he would rather stay with me and chase squirrels .... to each his own.

Most of my television time is devoted to old films -- and, an occasion recent one. I prefer action and mystery movies, but I am open to most others, too. In many ways, I think films from the 1940s are the best and, fortunately for me, there are two or three cable channels which run movies continuously -- some going back to the silent era of the 1920s and even earlier. My current exposure to news is an hour or so when I get up in the morning and an hour newscast most evenings.

I think Tarja Turunen is a fantastic singer and has superb stage presence. I used one of her performances a few years ago with a post, but I cannot recall if it was a Nightwish song or one by her on her own -- the latter, I think. Nightwish will be in Saint Paul next March and even though Tarja is no longer with the band, I hope to attend the concert. I understand what you mean by the band's music being "too heavy." I like it, but only so much of it for so long a period of time.

You, too, Liplatus .... I hope your weekend will be perfect in every way .... perhaps, you can find a snowball fight or go sledding -- after you have finished shoveling ....

Something special ....
