One more encore for Tom

          Tom Petty .... October 20, 1950 -- October 02, 2017

A couple of verses from
"Something Good Coming"
by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers:

I'm watching the water
Watching the coast
Suddenly I know
What I want the most

And I want to tell you
Still I hold back
I need some time
Get my life on track ....

.... And I'm in for the long run
Wherever it goes
Ridin' the river
Wherever it goes

Tom Petty... 67 years old. Cardiac arrest. In eighteen days it would be his birthday. He didn't make it.

What did I know about this singer and musician? Unfortunately, not much.
I chose to listen to his song " I Wan't Back Down which I have never listened before and I liked it immediately. "Running Down a Dream..." a rocking cool song also and all his songs in your post are wonderful.

You made a nice tribute to this talented singer and songwriter, Fram.

Sorry, made a mistake. Tom Petty was 66 years old...

I would listen to Tom Petty on occasion, Kaya, and I particularly liked the songs on his "Full Moon Fever" album.

And, I enjoyed the music of the Traveling Wilburys, largely because I enjoyed the music of its five members individually and when they were with other bands. Put Petty in a room making music with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison, and the resulting sounds will be absolutely marvelous.

Thank you, Kaya, for your visit and for your complimentary words ....

I read from Iltalehti about the death of a talented musician.
He was a respected musician. Two Grammy Awards and many suggestions.

Thank you for the music Fram Actual!
I like her quieter music.

Tom Petty was not among my favorite performers, but I liked all of his songs and I do have two of his albums. He is an integral part of classic rock, no doubt about it.

Addiction is a strange thing. I never have understood it, but, then again, I never have experimented with any "hard drugs." I suppose I could be lucky in that sense. I do like to drink, but never have allowed it to control me. For a long time, I thought I was "hooked" on tobacco, but quit smoking one day and never looked back. Yes, addiction puzzles me ....

Thank you, Anita, for coming and for commenting. I like the song, "Learning to Fly," too. I used it with a post just before I left for Poland in 2009.

These songs are sort of low key, and I think that is a good way to describe Tom Petty. In the same breath, I would say his dress on stage was that of a Western hippie (very noticeable) and his music has been called a variety of soft rock/southern rock/folk rock (no matter, it all is good, easy listening music).

I was not familiar with the word, "Iltalehti," Liplatus, and had to do a search on the internet. I thought it might be a newspaper, and was happy to discover that it was one. To read it, though, I would have to learn Finnish, and I am not at all certain that would be possible for me .... hmmmm ....

Thank you, Liplatus, for coming and for commenting. I will try to post quieter music for you now and then, but I need rock 'n' roll to maintain my equilibrium in a world of utter confusion.

Hi Fram!what are your thougths about the shooting in Las Vegas?a terrible act we think!I mean how is it possible for one person solo to do such a crime?

Fram Actual said...

There is no way at this point in time to measure mental illness in terms of degrees or even a foolproof way to recognize it in anyone who might be affected by it. Neither is there any way to understand the depth of depravity which exists within some individuals until and unless there is some overt act. How can some people torture others? How can some people gun down others after making them dig their own graves? How can some people herd others by the dozens into gas chambers? I do not know, but I do know there are such people living among us.

There are aberrations among us, Anita, and there probably always will be people whose actions horrify most of us and seem to have no logical or reasonable explanation. What happened in Las Vegas is a spotlight example of that type of person committing that type of action.

Apparently, the guy was a "high stakes" gambler and, evidently, he was an extreme risk taker. Those two elements explain a great deal about him; when more information becomes available, I might add to this piece. Right now, no one is sure he did act alone, although it seems likely that he did.

The only certainty is that no amount of anti-gun laws/measures/restrictions will effectively end incidents such as the Las Vegas massacre. It is estimated there are 270 million firearms in the United States. They could not all be confiscated without an internal civil war and, even if all those guns would be confiscated, after the war ended outlaws would still find ways to obtain them or make them: Such is the history of weapons ....

More to come another day .... maybe ....

Thanx Fram.I think he was not alone. Also i think Anders Breivik was not alone. The norwegian massacre
Well.I theres soo much strange people going around in the world right now and they get soo much support from the locals..As the new German partie..Which rises in Germany right now..they say..95 % ofThe German soldiers where good soldiers during the ww2 and did not do anything evel ..They say its all a lie.I mean who can support and belive this?Apperantly many people.
About guns in usa..Its the people to decide whats the best thing..I think! One has to defend oneselvf in one way or another.
We have no police with guns here in Norway..and the crime factor is low..Mostly knifes battles.Rapes and so on..

Ok.Got free time this weekend.Alex turning 18 years today!

Have a good weekend Fram and thanx again for the answer.

It is entirely possible a lone individual could be responsible for the carnage in Norway, created by Anders Breivik, and the bloodshed in Las Vegas, caused by Stephen Paddock. Breivik seems intelligent enough in a sense, but I am not familiar enough with the case to make any judgment. Paddock is too much of an unknown at this point for anyone to arrive at a sound conclusion one way or the other. Obviously, they both are very disturbed and unbalanced.

Frankly, I think Breivik is the greatest criminal (if one murderer can be "greater" than another), specifically targeting children and killing 77 people. Paddock apparently was shooting wildly into a crowd and, so far, 59 people are dead.

I fully believe evil does exist in this world and that each of us has a degree of both good and evil within us. Whichever of those elements becomes dominant is up to each of us as individuals to control. In a sense, that is what "master of our fate" means. As for the thing known as "mob frenzy," that can occur at any time and at any place in varying degrees. It is evident in military actions and in crowds of civilians at sporting events, for instance. I have seen it a few times in both situations, and I think it often is responsible for people losing control of themselves.

So, Anita, I do not wish to include this segment in with a birthday wish for Alex .... so, I will close and resume ....

Fram Actual said...

I want to wish Happy Birthday to Alexander ....

He has gone from being a boy to being a man since the time when the paths of his mother, Anita, and I first crossed on the sea of blogs in 2009.

Eighteen was a pivotal age for me in many respects. I was married for the first time four months after my birthday. I made my first parachute jumps when I was that age, and had my first experience in actual combat. I learned a great deal from those experiences and I regret not one of them, although I am not so sure I would choose to do any of them again. I learned from them, that is true, but they each cost me in ways that forever changed my life.

The moral of this birthday wish is that I hope Alexander will be a wiser individual as an eighteen-year-old man than I was at that age.

Happy Birthday, Alexander, good luck, and weigh your decisions carefully.

Alexander says thank you!And in some years he will go to america to visit our family and may be escape from this country..He will not attend the milletary(For now)and continue his education in health care..I dont know what he will choose--I think something in health care..A doctor may be..whatever he choose to do..I support him!

About Breivik.Yes he choose to slaughter all of the young upcoming "Red thinking youth leaders "in our country..Now thers almost noone left..and the partie has gone down..Here.the blue blue wind is rising with
Minister for Immigration and Integration in the Ministry of Justice and Emergency Affairs in Erna Solberg's Government, which says in public that the Red parties are licking Is and ect ect on their back--And so its going on...
Ok Fram.I will not trouble you more with my comments and politic thinking..instead today we wil enjoy a sunny day in Bergen.Feeding the sparrows and ducks and having a lovely sunday

See you around

Apparently he hasn't died. It was all a mistake. I have to admit that I have never been a Heartbreakers kind of fella. I have listened to the occasional hit here and there but I have never listened to an entire Tom Petty album. I did like his contribution to The Travelling Wilburys, though.

Greetings from London.

Fram Actual said...

Well, Anita, do not ever think you are troubling me with your comments. On the contrary, I find them interesting and I enjoy them.

I am mostly glad Alexander has no military aspirations at this time. Before I entered the Marine Corps, I had thoughts of making the military my career. It took only a few months to decide that would not be an appropriate life for me. It was and, I assume, it still is too bureaucratic for my taste. I had some good moments there, but I am too much of a free spirit to survive in such a confined atmosphere for years and years and years ....

Occupations in health care are sure winners, I think, and Alex would be wise to pick one there and to pursue it. To become a doctor would require years of study and hard work, but if that is what he would want, I believe he could achieve it. I have been acquainted with a few doctors and know I would not have had the dedication and the perseverance to have become one. I think truly dedicated doctors must be few and far between.

In a political sense, it is true I am conservative in most regards and it also is true I believe most career politicians of any political party are no more than corrupt, power-hungry individuals who do not understand the meaning of public service. I think the "real thing" in terms of politicians is even more rare than a dedicated doctor.

Most of us, I think, find reasons we wish to leave our native countries. I feel that way at times. I have left a few times, but I always come back. I always return and I still am here because I can discover nowhere I would rather be than in the United States. Not in a metropolitan area of Minnesota, but somewhere here in this country.

Thank you, Anita, for returning still again and for writing here once more. It makes me happy when you come ....

You must have different sources than I do, CiL ....

www.tompetty.com has him RIP;
Wikipedia has him dead;
Most of what I see on the internet is a few days old and reads:
"Petty dead, maybe not dead" .... or, words to that effect ....

Either way, I am in a win/win situation: If he is dead, I am covered; if he is not dead, I can rerun this post when he does die.

No matter, thank you, CiL, for coming here and for writing a comment. I was not a true fan of his music, either, but when one of his songs came on the radio I always listened to it and I always enjoyed it -- and, I do have two of his albums.

¡Hola Fran!

¡Hello Fram!

It was a pleasure listening to the videos of this fantastic singer Tom Petty. That it was certainly a very sad ending! But I think that we all are born with a destiny marked and when the time comes, comes in any way. But Tom lives in the memory forever: what are the major Artistas.Bonitos verses you have dedicated to him, they liked me and that the translator does not translate as I'd like. But I do understand it, and I do not understand what I feel. I leave a kiss and my gratitude. Is very - very happy.

Tom Petty is among the "royalty" of contemporary rock music, Marina. Of that, there is no doubt, and his songs will still be heard even when the generations now living have passed on to whatever lies beyond. I picked these three songs because, from my point of view, they represent him as he was in life.

The verses from the song, "Something Good Coming," which appear here seem to me to be part of Petty's belief structure. When I listen to that song, I am drawn to the words of John Donne which appear in his Meditation XVII:

"Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."

Thank you, Marina, for visiting me and for writing your thoughts ....

Eu gostei bastante de ouvir Tom Petty.
A letra é muito curiosa, mas gostei.
Bom fim de semana Fram!
Aqui esta muito calor. Penso que ai o inverno já chegou.

I did not see your comment on this post or on the October 1 post until moments ago, Smareis, so I am very, very late in replying. I apologize.

First, I am glad that you enjoyed listening to the songs of Tom Petty. His music was and continues to be a vital segment of the rock 'n' roll era. As for the lyrics being "very curious," if you would be more specific, I might be able to help solve the mystery. Some of these songs are about thirty years old, so references in them could be rather obscure.

Anyway .... I hope you have a fine weekend, too, Smareis, and I thank you for visiting me and for listening to Tom ....

Something special ....
